Carolyn Shafer, Co-Chair and Mission Coordinator for PARA (Patagonia Area Resource Alliance)
Modern Day Mining in the Patagonia Mountains - Its Danger and Destruction for Santa Cruz County
Carolyn understands the long march for justice for the people of Patagonia and the area’s uniquely fragile ecosystem. She will provide a comprehensive history of 21st Century mining in this area, and how it impacts all parts of the natural resource system in greater Santa Cruz County. With nearly 12 years leading the mission, PARA has been instrumental in litigating mining issues against failures by State and Federal agencies that are supposed to be protecting our public health. Carolyn’s frank talk is a “must see” tactical perspective to understanding the complications, contradictions, and legislative challenges Santa Cruz County residents face with the current initiatives proposed from the Australian mining company South32.
